Bimatoprost is a medicated eye drop that is indicated in the treatment of glaucoma or other causes of raised intraocular pressure.
Bimatoprost forms part of a category of drugs known as prostamides. Prostamides have many uses in the human body, one of which is to dilate the canals that drain fluids from the eyes. Bimatoprost thus accomplishes its objective of reducing intraocular pressure by causing the drainage of excess fluid from the eyes.
Bimatoprost eye drops lower the pressure in the eye by helping the flow of fluid out of the eye chamber.
Bimatoprost eye drops can be used alone or together with other eyedrops/medicines to lower raised pressure within your eyes.
Bimatoprost is also known as Lumigan.

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Use Bimatoprost exactly as directed.
Bimatoprost eye drops are usually used once a day.
Wash the hands before using the eye drops. Tilt the head back slightly and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Place one drop in this pocket whilst looking away from the dropper. Close the eyes and prevent the solution from falling off through the tear ducts for about one minute.
Enough medication should be applied to completely cover the affected area with a thin film. Bimatoprost should be gently and thoroughly massaged into the affected area.
Do not use more than the amount prescribed for you. Do not use on large areas of the body for a long time (such as every day for many weeks or months) - unless your doctor tells you to.
Missing of dose
Do not take double dose. If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule.
If you overdose Bimatoprost and you don't feel good you should visit your doctor or health care provider immediately.
Store at a room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) away from moisture, light and heat. Throw away the after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.
Bimatoprost has its side effects. The most common are:
- dry eyes
- vision disturbances
- eye burning feeling
- unfamiliar sensation
- darkened eyelashes
- irritating feeling
- conjunctival edema
- discharge from the eye
- pigmentation in iris
Side effects manifestations are not only depend on medicine you are taking but also depend on your health state and on the other factors.
Do not take Bimatoprost if you are allergic to Bimatoprost components.
It is not known whether Bimatoprost will harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medicine without your doctor's advice if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Avoid using Bimatoprost when wearing contact lenses as it contains preservatives that can be absorbed by the lenses. A period of 15 minutes should be allowed between the use of Bimatoprost and the wearing of contact lenses.
Strictly keep the dropper from touching any surface (eyes or hands) as this may lead to contamination. A contaminated dropper could result in infection of the eyes.
Using Bimatoprost with thimerosal-containing ophthalmic medications results in the formation of solids (by precipitation). It is advisable to wait at least five minutes between the drugs. There may be other drugs that interact with bimatoprost. The prescribing doctor should be informed of any drugs that you are already consuming.
Do not stop taking Bimatoprost suddenly.
